Bombers

The Bombers from each Force in AW2.

Bombers are an Air Unit. They have appeared in every Advance Wars game to date. They are very powerful and can inflict massive damage to Land and Naval Units, they cannot however attack other Air Units.

Bombers in Game Boy Wars 3, instead of carpet bombing, actually attack the terrain, hitting its new location and all adjacent spaces, as well as damaging--possibly killing--any surface units, allied or enemy, caught in the blast. They can not counterattack at all. The carpet Bombers in Game Boy Wars 3 are Attackers.

Strategy

Bombers are highly powerful, but also highly vulnerable. Fighters are a real problem for bombers due to their very high movement range and ability to destroy a bomber in one hit at full health. Keep one or two missile units handy if you plan on using them, and keep them near your HQ when not in immediate use. When kept safe, bombers are capable of massive damage to infantry and tanks.

Competitive Play

While Bombers are not without practical use, it has too many disadvantages.

  • Saving up for them requires you to cede your unit count advantage.
  • They're overpriced, early to mid game, but may be viable late-game.
  • Fighters are more devastating to Bombers than Bombers are to land units.
  • Anti-Air units, for nearly 1/3 of the price of a Bomber, are a big threat to them.
  • Expensive tanks, beyond the occasional Md. Tank, are rarely used.
  • B-Copters counter vehicles just fine for less than 1/2 the price.

Bombers are a niche unit in competitive play, even with the minor price cut in Days of Ruin.

Trivia

  • The Orange Star bomber resembles the American B-52 Stratofortress, but with only four engines instead of eight due to design. The Rubinelle bomber is also a B-52, having all eight engines.
  • The Blue Moon bomber resembles the British Avro Vulcan. The Vulcan in real life is actually a delta-wing aircraft.
  • The Green Earth bomber resembles the British Hawker Siddeley Nimrod. In real-life, it is a maritime patrol aircraft.
  • The Yellow Comet bomber strangely has nose glassing appropriate for an WWII heavy bomber like the B-17, but with jet engines instead of propellers, it is likely based on either the American B-17, or more appropirately countrywise the Japanese G4M, however it has elements of both, the twin engines of the G4M, cockpit design of the B-17, and the general shape of both bombers.
  • The Lazurian and IDS bombers resemble the Russian Tu-22M Backfire.
