Flares are a Land Unit. To date their one and only appearance is in Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. Although offensively weak (their only weapon being a Machine Gun) they have the unique ability to fire Flares which illuminate squares of terrain in Fog of War. However, when compared to the Recon, they do significantly more damage against similar anti infantry units and can prove pivotal in denying enemy forces line of sight.
On maps with no FOW their ability has no effect, rendering them mostly obsolete. However, if low on funds, they perform better in combat than recon against light armor units, but with less mobility unless there is a good deal of forest terrain. This makes it a useful low-cost defensive unit. Rigs cost the same, and have much stronger armor, but cannot attack. The situation will dictate what to spend your 5,000 funds on.

Overview

Flares can use their ability once per turn (assuming they have enough ammunition left). Each unit has a range of 5 and a single flare illuminates all squares in an area of 2 around the target, also lighting up Woods and Reefs. Flares may not move and fire a flare on the same turn.

Flares benefit from being relatively cheap and easy to deploy, being passable options against lightly armored enemies or support units caught off-guard. Flares are an excellent support unit for both indirect units (for spotting) and directs (for ambush prevention).
